About Us

What is a Non-Traditional Student?

Are you older than the average student (though there is no age restriction) * Have a large gap between ending high school and beginning college * Are you neurodiverse * Returning to college to finish a degree *  Formerly incarcerated * Seeking a second career *  Working full-time or part-time while enrolled*  Disabled * Are you married with/without children *  Justice or socially impacted *  Are you a single parent or an adult caregiver *

Are you a veteran

There is no consensus on what makes a student non-traditional. One can have any one of a list of characteristics, and you can have more than one. You can be low, medium, or highly non-traditional, but everyone seems to agree on one factor, age.  And though there is no one agreed upon age, we have decided to take the middle road and say that being about 24 makes you non-traditional. However, age is not the only factor or restriction. You can be 18, be a working single parent, and you would be a non-traditional student.

  • Non-traditional students comprise about 30%  of currently enrolled college students nationwide. (https://pnpi.org/factsheets/post-traditional-students/#:~:text=In%20fall%202019%2C%20post%2Dtraditional,of%20all%20male%20postsecondary%20enrollment.According)
  • And according to UNLV's data for 2023 we are about 37% of the total student population (ages 23 and over) https://it.unlv.edu/ir/reports.
  • More than half of universities do not recognize this group as an underserved population, though the majority are women, low-income, and of a federally recognized minority. (https://naspa.org/images/uploads/main/Hittepole_NASPA_Memo.pdf)
  • Colleges with programs geared towards identifying and supporting NTS have higher graduation rates among this unique and growing population. (https://nces.ed.gov/pubs/web/97578g.asp)
